forgotten Castle and Ghost Station: A Hungarian Entrepreneur’s Legacy
Table of Contents
A crumbling castle and a barely-there train station in rural Hungary are resurfacing, revealing the story of a 19th-century entrepreneur, Geist Gáspár, and his ambitious ventures. The Kiscsákó area, administratively part of Orosháza in Békés county, has a history intertwined with this figure, from the construction of a grand estate too a little-known railway line.
A castle Designed by Ybl Miklós
The Kiscsákó area first gained attention due to its castle. Several years ago, news reports focused on the dilapidated state of a hunting lodge. Built in 1864, the Geist-kastély (Geist Castle) was commissioned by Gáspár Geist and designed by the renowned Hungarian architect, Ybl Miklós, as reported by 24.hu.
According to the Ybl Miklós Virtual Archive, Geist initially used the castle as a rental property. The construction itself was overseen by Gottgeb Antal, a prominent master builder of the era.
Following the political changes after the fall of communism, the castle was purchased by a German investor, Karl-Heinz Rechmann, who initiated renovation work. However, Rechmann’s untimely death halted the project, and the castle has remained in a state of disrepair ever since.
The Mysterious Kiscsákó Train Station
Adding to the intrigue is the story of the Kiscsákó train station. Relatively little is known about it, but research based on the commentary of Sándor Antal, as featured on vasutallomasok.hu, suggests a direct connection to Geist Gáspár. The builder of the railway line was, in fact, the castle owner himself. The line primarily served to transport sugar beets until around the mid-1950s.
Recently, attention was drawn to the station after an observer noticed a foreign sign at the Nyugati railway station hinting at the station’s existence. A TikTok video showcasing the station’s minimal presence – seemingly just a sign indicating a MÁV (Hungarian State Railways) stop – has circulated online, sparking curiosity. From cooper to Industrialist: the Life of Geist Gáspár
Who was the man behind thes ambitious projects? Geist Gáspár originated from Gyula, where he completed elementary school and apprenticed as a cooper. He then moved to Vienna to master the art of candle making. Returning to Hungary with his newfound skills, he established a candle factory in Budapest. He afterward ventured into animal husbandry and pig trading, according to details from the János Mogyoróssí City Library in Gyula. His name lives on today through the Geist Gáspár equestrian memorial race.
It is indeed believed that Geist built the train station purely for logistical reasons, to ensure the smooth operation of his agricultural holdings in the Békés region. Like the castle, the station fell into disuse after his death, explaining its current, almost forgotten state.
