Snapchat Expands Location Sharing with New ‘Arrival Notifications’ Feature
Snapchat is bolstering its location-based services with the launch of “Arrival Notifications,” allowing users to automatically inform selected friends and family when they reach specific destinations. The new feature, announced on Monday, builds upon the platform’s existing “Home Safe” functionality and signals a broader strategy to compete in the increasingly popular location-sharing market.
Snapchat’s latest offering enables users to set up one-time or recurring notifications for locations beyond their homes. “Arrival notifications now work for everyday moments, like letting someone know you’re back for the night while you’re traveling or automatically sharing when you’ve arrived for a weekly class, workout, or meeting, without having to remember to send a message,” according to a company release.
Expanding Snap Map’s Utility
The introduction of Arrival Notifications comes as Snap Map, launched in 2017, continues to gain traction. Snapchat revealed last summer that Snap Map boasts more than 400 million monthly active users. Initially designed as a way for users to visualize their friends’ locations and discover public snaps, Snap Map has evolved to include features for finding local businesses and points of interest.
Privacy and Control Remain Paramount
Snapchat emphasizes that user privacy remains a core principle. As with Home Safe, Arrival Notifications are only available to friends with whom a user has already chosen to share their location. Location sharing on Snap Map is turned off by default, and users must actively opt-in to share their whereabouts or receive notifications. One-time notifications will expire either immediately after being sent or within 24 hours.
How to Use Arrival Notifications
Utilizing the new feature is straightforward. Users first need to share their location with a trusted contact. They can then navigate to the friend’s profile and select “Arrival Notifications.” From there, users can pinpoint a location on the map and assign it a custom name – for example, “running club” or “piano lessons.” Finally, they can choose between a one-time or recurring notification, triggering an automatic alert to their friend upon arrival.
Competition Heats Up in Location Sharing
With these new features, Snapchat is directly challenging established players in the location-sharing space. The company aims to carve out a niche against dedicated family safety apps like Life360 and Apple’s “Where’s My” service. One analyst noted that Snapchat’s appeal to a younger demographic could provide a competitive advantage in attracting users seeking a more integrated social experience alongside location-sharing functionality.
Snapchat’s continued investment in Snap Map and its associated features demonstrates a commitment to evolving beyond its origins as a disappearing photo app and establishing itself as a versatile platform for connection and awareness.
