A major winter storm has brought transportation across Hungary to a standstill, with numerous accidents, road closures, and stranded vehicles reported nationwide.
A critically important snowfall, beginning Tuesday afternoon, has triggered a cascade of travel problems throughout Hungary. According to reports from Útinform, the national road and traffic facts centre, conditions have deteriorated rapidly, leaving trucks immobilized on major highways and resulting in complete or partial closures of several key routes. Motorists are facing treacherous conditions, including slushy,snow-covered,and salt-treated road surfaces.
Highway Chaos: Accidents and Closures Mount
The situation is particularly severe on several major highways. An accident occurred on the M43 motorway, in the direction of the M5 motorway, near kilometer 42, with traffic being diverted at the Abátfalva/Kövegy/Királyfalva junction. further compounding the issues, a collision involving two vehicles on the M1 highway, heading towards Hegyeshalom in the Biatorbágy area, has closed a lane at kilometer 24, creating a backlog exceeding 3 kilometers.
Trucks have become a major source of disruption, with multiple incidents reported. One truck became stuck at a roundabout on highway 1 near Tatabánya, halting traffic at kilometer 51. Similarly,a stranded truck on highway 22,between szécsény and Őhalom at kilometer 36,is causing intermittent disruptions, with drivers currently limited to a single lane. Traffic on highway 81, between Bakonysárkány and Mór, has also been brought to a standstill at kilometer 36 due to another stuck truck.
the severity of the conditions was underscored by a head-on collision between two passenger cars on highway 87 in the Rum settlement area, resulting in a complete traffic stoppage at kilometer 3. Further incidents were reported on connecting roads, including a truck stuck on the Vác-Gödöllő road (route 2104) near Szada at kilometer 20, reducing traffic to a single lane, and another truck stranded in Heves county, between Egercsehi and Bekölce, halting traffic on route 2510 at kilometer 3.
Widespread hazardous Conditions
Beyond specific incidents, Útinform has warned motorists of generally hazardous conditions. The road surface on the M3 highway between Hatvan and Budapest is described as “mostly salty and sometimes slushy.” Conditions are even more challenging on the M3 between Hatvan and Mezőkövesd, and on the M30, where surfaces are a mix of salt, slush, and snow. similar conditions are prevalent on main and side roads throughout much of the country.
The situation escalated further with the complete closure of highway 2 near Vác after a truck became stuck at kilometer 42,as announced by the Disaster Management authorities. another truck is currently stuck on highway 1 near Bicske, where local firefighters are working to tow the vehicle and restore traffic flow. A traffic barrier has been erected in the affected area.
Border Crossings Impacted
The adverse weather is also impacting international travel. Slovenian authorities temporarily closed Hungarian-Slovenian border crossings to truck traffic Tuesday evening due to the snow. Police are currently directing trucks to designated parking areas on the Hungarian side of the border.

The ongoing disruptions highlight the vulnerability of Hungary’s transportation network to severe winter weather.Authorities are urging motorists to avoid travel if possible and to exercise extreme caution if driving is unavoidable.
