New York Winter Weather: Tracking Snowfall and Average Last Snow Dates

New York residents are navigating a particularly active winter season, marked by a diverse range of weather events – from quick-hitting clipper systems to prolonged periods of intense Arctic air and significant lake-effect snow. This season’s conditions have resulted in highly variable snowfall totals across the state, prompting officials to urge residents to stay informed.

A Season of Contrasts

This winter has not been defined by a single type of storm. Instead, New York has experienced a spectrum of conditions. Fast-moving clipper systems have delivered brief bursts of snow accompanied by gusty winds, while lingering Arctic air masses have allowed snow to accumulate over several days. Particularly impactful has been the lake-effect snow generated by Lake Erie, resulting in localized, heavy accumulations along the western and eastern shores. These lake-effect bands are capable of dumping over a foot of snow in concentrated areas, creating stark differences in snowfall totals even within short distances.

Interactive Snowfall Map Available

To help residents stay informed, an interactive map is available to track snowfall accumulation. The map, updated multiple times daily, displays snowfall totals over the past 24, 48, and 72 hours, as well as seasonal totals dating back to October 1st. Residents can search by address to see how much snow has fallen in their specific location.

Beyond tracking current conditions, many New Yorkers are wondering when the final snowfall of the season will occur. Historical data from the National Weather Service provides insight into typical last measurable snowfall dates for major cities across the state. Here’s a breakdown:
