Seoul National University Hospital announced on Thursday, July 18th, the opening of the center, which will operate a comprehensive, simulation-based surgical technology education infrastructure. The center represents a significant investment in the future of surgical training and a commitment to excellence in patient care.
A First-of-Its-Kind Facility in Korea
The Surgical Skills Education Center is unique in Korea as the nation’s first skills training facility built exclusively for a single surgical department. This specialized space is designed to systematically strengthen the surgical skills of residents and experienced medical professionals alike. The center’s creation was made possible through generous donations from various sponsors, including Lee Young-sul.
Located on the 5th floor of the Biomedical Research Institute, the center’s design prioritizes repeated learning and evaluation in an environment closely mirroring a real clinical setting. This immersive approach allows trainees to refine their techniques and build confidence before operating on patients.
Cutting-Edge Technology for Enhanced Training
The center boasts a comprehensive suite of advanced surgical simulation tools, including:
- Robotic surgery console and simulator: Providing realistic experience with minimally invasive robotic procedures.
- Laparoscopic surgery simulator: Allowing surgeons to practice complex procedures using laparoscopic techniques.
- Endoscopy simulator: Enhancing skills in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy.
- Ultrasound equipment: Facilitating training in ultrasound-guided procedures.
- Vascular anastomosis training equipment: Providing hands-on practice in delicate vascular repair techniques.
“Trainees can practice surgical techniques precisely before performing surgery on actual patients,” a senior official stated, highlighting the center’s commitment to patient safety.
Expanding the Scope of Surgical Education
The center will serve as an integrated education and training space for a diverse range of medical professionals, including residents, full-time doctors, specialists, and professors. Plans are underway to progressively broaden the curriculum, moving from fundamental techniques to more advanced procedures. This expansion will also support the standardization of treatment protocols and the seamless introduction of innovative surgical techniques.
A key focus will be on “hands-on education,” where faculty members will directly mentor and guide residents, fostering a more personalized and effective learning experience. “The surgical skills education center will be a space that establishes a new standard for resident education,” said Jang Jin-young, head of the Department of Surgery. “Going forward, we will gradually expand beyond resident education to full-time doctor and specialist education, developing it into a core educational infrastructure that improves patient safety and surgical performance.”
