by time news

New Delhi ∙ Rupinder Singh Sodhi alias RS Sodhi stepped down from the post of Managing Director after taking India’s largest milk product distributor, Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Limited (GCMMF) to the steps of growth. With Sodhi stepping down as MD in 2010, it also marks the end of an era for Amul. RS Sodhi leaves the post having increased the annual turnover more than five times what it was when he took over as MD.

Sodhi joined GCMMF in March 1982 as Senior Sales Officer. The company’s turnover that day was only Rs 121 crore. Sodhi’s salary is Rs.1450. In 2000, Sodhi became the general manager of the marketing department of the company. After ten years in 2010, Sodhi was appointed as the MD of the company.

Sodhi was greatly helped by working under the direct guidance of Varghese Kurian, known as the father of the White Revolution in India, for more than three decades. When Sodhi took charge as the MD of the company, the annual turnover in sales was Rs 9774 crore. By the 2021–22 season, it had grown nearly five-fold to Rs 46,481 crore. Reports also show that the total turnover of Amul Brandis products was over Rs 52,000 crore in 2019-20.

As Managing Director, he introduced fifty new products in the Amul brand. While there are reports that Sodhi was forced to resign as MD after a decade of service, his contribution to Amul’s growth cannot be overlooked. Sodhi’s version is that resignation was on his mind for the last 3-4 years.
