Alexander Orozco Zambrano, the soldier involved in the tragic event that resulted in the death of three of his companions at the Army base in Putumayo, died while receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), after his capture.

The event took place in the Infantry Battalion No. 49 “General Juan Bautista Solarte Obando” of Tagua, in Putumayo. Orozco Zambrano, who was performing sentinel duties, triggered a shootout that claimed the lives of Captain Juan Pablo Herrera Mazo, Second Sergeant Carlos Rojas Otavo and soldier Yoandris Mejía. Another soldier was also injured and is currently recovering in a medical center.

After the incident, units of the National Army, the Colombian Navy and the National Police carried out a joint operation to capture the soldier. During the confrontation, Orozco Zambrano tried to attack the uniformed officers, which caused them to respond with defensive measures. In the exchange of fire, the soldier was seriously injured and was later taken to receive medical attention.

The authorities revealed that the soldier was trying to escape in the company of another individual, carrying with him the rifle and a mini uzi weapon, which was thrown into the river during the chase. The situation has generated an investigation to determine if this violent act was linked to a possible infiltration of the Carolina Ramírez front, one of the FARC dissidents.
