Sophee Peterson Crowned Gatorade National Volleyball Player of the Year

A rising star in the world of high school athletics, Sophee Peterson of Byron Nelson High School, was unexpectedly named the Gatorade National Volleyball Player of the Year this week, marking a career-defining moment for the junior standout.

Peterson, already recognized as the Gatorade Texas Player of the Year, believed she was attending a meeting to be fitted for her second state championship ring on Thursday when a surprise celebration unfolded, revealing the national honor.

The presentation, orchestrated by Byron Nelson head coach Brianne Groth, brought together Peterson’s family, teammates, and Olympic medalist April Ross, who presented the coveted trophy. “Joining the elite group of Gatorade Player of the Year alumni means being part of a community of athletes who have gone on to define their sports,” stated a senior director at Gatorade Brand Marketing. “Sophee has proven that she belongs in this group of greats, and we can’t wait to watch her continue on to greatness in the years to come.”

Peterson’s selection from over half a million high school volleyball players nationwide places her among a distinguished lineage of athletes who have collectively earned over 91 gold medals and 13 National Championships. Following the announcement, Peterson experienced a taste of professional athlete life, including a styling session, photoshoot, and media engagements.

This achievement makes Peterson the fourth volleyball player from Texas to receive the national award, and notably, the first to earn the distinction before her senior year. She joins Byron Nelson alumnae Paige Flickinger (2018-19, 2019-20) and Coach Groth (2006-07, Amarillo High School) as Bobcats to claim the Texas Player of the Year title.

Dominating on the Court

Peterson has been instrumental in leading the Byron Nelson Bobcats to consecutive state and national championships, culminating in an undefeated 42-0 record last season. The team enters the upcoming season with an impressive 78-match winning streak, standing as one of only two teams in Texas history to achieve back-to-back titles while losing just one match within that timeframe in the UIL’s highest classification.

The talented setter has already committed to play collegiately at Texas A&M University, the current NCAA National Champions.

Beyond the Trophy: Gatorade’s Investment in Future Stars

The Gatorade Player of the Year award represents more than just athletic achievement; it signifies a commitment to supporting the holistic development of young athletes. Beginning this year, Gatorade will provide ongoing support to National Player of the Year recipients through the Gatorade Sports Science Institute (GSSI). This includes access to GSSI scientists, personalized testing at GSSI Labs, and tailored hydration and fuel plans designed to maximize performance and recovery.

The brand also intends to amplify the athletes’ journeys through brand events, community initiatives, and increased media exposure, providing platforms to inspire the next generation. To date, the Gatorade Player of the Year program has distributed over $6.4 million in grants to winners, benefiting more than 2,200 organizations.

A Well-Rounded Champion

Peterson’s excellence extends beyond the volleyball court. She is an active member of Byron Nelson’s BioMedical Academy, having earned the prestigious “white coat” rating this year. Demonstrating a commitment to community service, Peterson has dedicated significant time as a program leader at the Byron Nelson Youth Volleyball Camp, particularly during the summer months. Academically, she maintains a weighted GPA of 4.64 and has secured athletic aid to attend Texas A&M University in the fall of 2027.

“What stands out for me about Sophee Peterson is her competitive fire,” noted Chris Tobolski, Chief Editor for Vballrecruiter.com. “She exhibits the same level of intensity, excitement and enthusiasm in a one-sided match as she does in a state final with everything on the line. That type of energy, combined with her skillset, elevates the play of everyone around her.” Tobolski further highlighted Peterson’s exceptional setting ability, noting her ability to make crucial plays even in challenging situations.

As part of Gatorade’s broader commitment to inclusivity in sports, each Player of the Year receives a grant to donate to a social impact partner of their choice.
