The South African authorities intercepted this Saturday a quarantine of buses coming from Zimbabwe that were transporting more than 440 children in an alleged case of human trafficking, the South African Border Management Authority (BMA) reported today.

“They were able to stop and search around 42 buses trying to enter South Africa and in them we found around 443 children under the age of eight without any parent or guardian,” BMA Commissioner Michael Masiapato said at a press conference this Sunday, according to They collect local media.

“Supposedly, they were being illegally introduced into South Africa,” he stressed, detailing that the vehicles were intercepted last night at the Beitbridge border post.

“We were able to get them off those buses and talk to Zimbabwean officials and we returned them to Zimbabwe,” he added, without giving further details.

According to Masiapato, it was a joint operation by the BMA, the Department (Ministry) of the Interior and the South African Police.
