BUKAVU – The United Nations Observation Mission for the Stabilization of Congo (Monusco) has announced its commitment to rehabilitate National Road number 5, which has become impassable due to its advanced state of disrepair in the territory of Fizi.

This announcement was made this Tuesday, May 22, 2023 by Cécilia Piazza, Head of Office of Monusco Sud-Kivu and Maniema. She told the provincial Minister of Infrastructure, Gaston Cissa Wa Numbe, in the presence of the provincial director of the National Road Maintenance Fund (FONER).

According to the head of MONUSCO, her organization intends to smooth the movement of people and goods in the town of Baraka within the framework of the partnership between the Democratic Republic of Congo and the United Nations. Hoping for this promise, the Minister of Infrastructure suggested to his host to intervene, if possible, as far as Lusenda in the Tanganyika sector where several trucks full of goods are blocked on both sides, following the impassability of the road.

For the realization of this work, a mixed team Monusco-Office des Routes Sud-Kivu and the Ministry of Infrastructure will carry out a descent on Monday, May 29 to inspect the quarries that will be operated by Monusco between the town of Baraka and Lusenda.

It should be noted that this road will be operational to the great satisfaction of users, according to the announcement already made by the Roads Office last week, on the start of works between Uvira and Baraka with the financing available from FONER in the Road Maintenance (PER) 2022.
