KYIV. April 17. UNN. South Korea, the United States and Japan launched trilateral missile defense drills in international waters of the East (Japan) Sea on Monday, amid stepped-up efforts to strengthen deterrence against North Korean threats. It informs UNNciting Yonhap.

“This was an opportunity to strengthen security cooperation between the South (South Korea – ed.), the United States and Japan against progressive nuclear and missile threats from the North (North Korea – ed.), as well as to strengthen the capabilities of our Navy to respond to ballistic missile launches “, – said the official representative of the South Korean Navy.

It is reported that after Pyongyang’s provocative actions, including the launch of an alleged solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile on April 13, the three countries are strengthening the coordination of security measures. According to a military statement, the South ROKS Yulgok Yi I, the US USS Benfold and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force’s JS Atago will take part in the exercise. All three are equipped with Aegis destroyers.

The training is focused on working out the procedures for detecting and tracking a ballistic missile target simulated by a computer, as well as on the exchange of relevant information. The three countries last held such trilateral missile defense exercises in February 2023.

It is noted that last week during the high-level defense dialogue, which was called “Trilateral Defense Talks”, the parties agreed to conduct regular exercises of anti-missile defense and anti-submarine forces to counter threats from North Korea.
