SeaShorts Film Festival 2025 to Spotlight Southeast Asian Cinema & Cultural Movements

A vibrant showcase of cinematic artistry and cultural exchange, the SeaShorts Film Festival will return to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from October 16 to 19, 2025. this year’s event promises a dynamic blend of film, theatre, and visual arts, all unified under the theme “Through The Cracks,” reflecting the powerful social and cultural currents shaping the region.
A Decade of Dialog
established in 2015, the festival has become a crucial platform for fostering dialogue and collaboration among Southeast Asian filmmakers. The event seeks to expand these conversations, recognizing the evolving landscape of artistic expression in Southeast Asia. This year’s festival received a record 703 submissions from eleven countries,with a significant number of entries originating from Indonesia and the Philippines.Ultimately, organizers selected 40 works for competition.
Exploring “Through The Cracks”
The festival’s central theme, “through The Cracks,” acknowledges the resilience of artistic expression in the face of complex socio-political realities. As one artistic program director explained, the theme highlights how short film, in particular, continues to evolve and find its voice despite ever-changing political, economic, and ethical challenges.
Diverse Programming Highlights
Beyond the core competition, SeaShorts 2025 will feature a range of special programs designed to celebrate diverse voices and cinematic approaches. These include:
- Shorts+: A program dedicated to showcasing the work of female directors and cinematographers from across Southeast Asia.
- beyond Indian Shores: Continuing its exploration of contemporary Tamil film, this program will revisit the South asian diaspora within Malaysian visual culture.
- Heatseeker Malaysia & Heatseeker Japan: Platforms for emerging student filmmakers from Malaysia and Japan.
- JAFF Picks: A curated selection of films in partnership with the Jogja Asian Film Festival – NETPAC (JAFF),spotlighting rising talent from the region.
The festival will also host a series of lectures and masterclasses for aspiring filmmakers.
Fusion of Art Forms: Sekolah Main Wayang Performance
A key highlight of SeaShorts 2025 will be a unique performance by the Sekolah Main Wayang Puppetry Troupe of Malaysia. The group will present Chemor Mai Pasak (Ruai) – roughly translated as “the Legend of the Ancestors” – a live performance blending stagecraft and cinema. Directed by Ayam Fared and multimedia artist Fairuz Sulaiman, the play will be performed by 13 Semai teenagers from Bota, Perak, and serves as a tribute to the cultural heritage of Malaysia’s indigenous Orang Asli community.The troupe demonstrated their commitment to community art last year through the awas Mawas puppet parade and various art exhibitions.
celebrating Tamil Art & Indonesian Cinema
SeaShorts 2025 will also celebrate the vibrant advancement of Tamil art in Malaysia, building on the success of the documentary Araro Ariraro, which revived forgotten Tamil folk songs from plantation worker communities. Curated by Gogularaajan Rajendra and Lena Srinivasan, the Beyond Indian Shores program will showcase Tamil short films from Malaysia and sri Lanka, highlighting the historical and creative connections between the two nations.
For the first time, the festival will present “Nusantara Focus,” a cinematic journey through the Indonesian archipelago, from Aceh to North Kalimantan, and from Sumbawa to Timika-Papua, culminating in vibrant Jakarta. This series, developed in collaboration with the Eagle institute Indonesia, aims to offer fresh perspectives on the rich and diverse life within Indonesia.
