Lighting with the message “Cease fire” in Callao, Madrid / Pedro Armestre
The emblematic Callao Square in the capital has been the scenario in which Spanish NGOs, together with the State Coordinator of Development Organizations and other organizations, have carried out a large-scale projection with which they join the global mobilizations to achieve a permanent ceasefire in the escalation of violence experienced in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, especially in Gaza, and in Israel.
The action consisted of the projection of an image requesting a permanent ceasefire on the emblematic Madrid Press Palace located in the Plaza de Callao, for which there was the collaboration of the Madrid Press Association.
The appeal joins similar ones being carried out in London, Paris, Montreal, Washington and other cities and seeks a permanent cessation of hostilities that protects the civilian population and allows the delivery of humanitarian aid to the population of Gaza. The participating NGOs and organizations also call for ending the forced displacement of highly vulnerable civilians, protecting medical and humanitarian personnel, as well as guaranteeing the departure of injured or sick people for urgent medical care.
“The civilian population cannot be victims of collective punishment,” according to the joint statement read during the event. “A permanent ceasefire remains our only option to prevent further loss of civilian life and an even greater humanitarian catastrophe. If we fail, an indelible stain will remain forever on our collective conscience.”.
The statement is addressed to the heads of State and Government, the European Union, the UN Security Council and the parties on the ground. The text emphasizes that the civilian population has no safe place to take refuge and recalls that water, food, fuel, medical supplies “and even body bags are exhausted or about to run out” in Gaza. “We are witnessing a nightmare of unfathomable death, pain and destruction,” according to the organizing organizations, who recall that entire families have disappeared in this escalation of violence.
