Solo Developer Launches ‘SPEAR’ – A Bug-Fighting Platformer for Xbox Series X|S

A new action-platformer, SPEAR, is set to launch on January 9th for Xbox Series X|S, offering players a unique challenge: saving a videogame from deletion by battling its internal glitches.

Benevento, Italy – december 17th, 2025 – Italian solo developer Andrea Cavuoto, also known for directing the award-winning short film Underdog, announced today the upcoming release of SPEAR. The game plunges players into a collapsing digital world overrun by bugs, tasking them with a desperate mission to restore order before its too late.

SPEAR casts players as Default, a seemingly insignificant non-playable character (NPC) armed with an unlikely weapon – a spear crafted from a broom and a mouse cursor. Default’s objective is to defeat the digital “bugs,” repair the game’s glitches, and ultimately prevent the developers from scrapping the entire project. According to a company release, the premise is a playful reflection of the challenges faced during game advancement.

A brand-new trailer accompanying the announcement provides a first look at the gameplay and the diverse abilities Default will unlock as players navigate increasingly corrupted levels.

The game boasts a dynamic combat system, blending elements of classic platformers with modern mechanics. Players can utilize precision throws, slow-motion effects, teleportation, parries, and gliding to overcome obstacles and defeat enemies. SPEAR aims to honor the legacy of beloved platforming titles while introducing a fluid and technically sophisticated combat experience.

“We’ve spent years fighting real bugs… so we decided to make a game about it,” said Andrea Cavuoto, founder and game director of Polyhedric. “Default is the only character unlucky enough to be in the wrong project at the wrong time, but also brave enough to try and save it. We can’t wait to see how Xbox players take on the monstrous Glitches we’ve unleashed.”

The Making of a Digital savior

Polyhedric is an self-reliant studio based in Benevento, Italy, founded by Cavuoto. The development of SPEAR was largely a solo effort,with Cavuoto handling the core aspects of game design,programming,animation,and art direction. The project also benefited from contributions to music, sound effects, and select 3D assets.

Prior to establishing Polyhedric, Cavuoto honed his skills as a Cinematic Director and Senior Animator on prominent projects including Epic Mickey: Rebrushed, SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated, and SpongeBob SquarePants: Titans of the Tide. This extensive experience in the animation industry clearly informs the polished aesthetic and dynamic movement within SPEAR.
