spotify’s direct messaging feature, launched in August, just got a little more social. Starting today, users can now create group chats within the music streaming app.
Group Chats Arrive on Spotify
The popular streaming service expands its messaging capabilities, allowing users to share music with up to ten friends.
- Spotify Messages now supports group conversations.
- Group chats are limited to a maximum of 10 participants.
- The same safety features and user controls apply to both one-on-one and group chats.
- Users can initiate group chats from their profile menu or the app’s sharing options.
The ability to chat with groups of friends directly within Spotify offers a new way to connect over shared musical tastes. “We love all the feedback on Messages,” the Spotify team announced today. “That’s why, starting today, you can now share to a group through Spotify Messages. Share the podcasts, playlists, and audiobooks you’re listening to with up to 10 friends and family members per chat, and keep the conversation going directly on Spotify.”
Currently, Spotify Messages are tucked away in a sliding menu accessible by tapping your profile picture. To start a group conversation, simply tap ‘Create group’ and select friends from the suggested list, or initiate one directly from the app’s sharing menu.
What happens when you message someone new on Spotify? First-time contacts will receive a message request, which they can choose to accept or block. users also have the option to disable Spotify Messages altogether through the Settings and privacy section, under Privacy and social, then Social features.
This move mirrors a trend among other platforms. YouTube, for example, previously offered direct messaging and recently began testing it again in select markets, as reported in November 2025.
Why did Spotify add group chats? Spotify introduced group chats to enhance user engagement and foster a more social experience within the app. The company observed positive feedback on its initial messaging feature and responded by expanding its capabilities to include group conversations. Who is affected? The update impacts all 700 million Spotify users, providing them with a new way to connect with friends and family over music. What is changing? users can now create group chats with up to 10 participants, sharing playlists, podcasts, and audiobooks directly within the Spotify app. How dose it work? Group chats can be initiated from a user’s profile menu or through the app’s sharing options. New contacts receive message requests, and users can disable messaging entirely in settings. The feature is currently live and available to all users.
