Xizor: The Forgotten Star Wars Villain Who Nearly Toppled the Empire

A powerful criminal mastermind operating in the shadows, Xizor remains a relatively unknown figure even among dedicated Star Wars fans, despite his ambition to dismantle the Galactic Empire from within. While Darth Vader and the Emperor command galactic fear, Xizor, a prince of the Fallen people and head of the Black Sun syndicate, quietly orchestrated a complex plot for revenge and power, documented in the Shadows of the Empire series of comics, novels, games, and audiobooks.

A Prince Ascends

Born approximately 100 years before the Battle of Yavin – the climactic confrontation in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope – Xizor hailed from a wealthy and respected royal family, the Sizhran, on the reptilian homeworld of the Fallen. He enjoyed a life of luxury on Coruscant, the former capital of the Republic and then the heart of the Empire, cultivating a network of allies through his charismatic persona. However, beneath the veneer of a accomplished entrepreneur with “Xizor Transport Systems,” he was already deeply involved with the criminal underworld, specifically the Black Sun association.

Xizor’s ambition was singular: to become the “Vigo,” the leader of Black Sun, and he ultimately succeeded. But his path to power was irrevocably altered by a devastating tragedy.

Revenge Forged in Tragedy

The catalyst for Xizor’s descent into a vengeful plot stemmed from the actions of Darth Vader. A secret Imperial research laboratory was established on Fallen, conducting illegal research into biological weapons. An accident at the facility resulted in a bacterial outbreak, devastating a portion of the city and claiming the lives of xizor’s family.

Vader responded by ordering the bombardment of the infected city, a decision Xizor perceived as a callous act of destruction. According to sources, Xizor meticulously manipulated data to obscure Vader’s direct responsibility, ensuring no personal connection could be drawn between the two. This act fueled a burning desire for retribution, carefully concealed from the galaxy.

A Double Game with the Emperor

Xizor’s plan was audacious: eliminate Vader and usurp his position as the Emperor’s right hand, not to rule alongside Palpatine, but to dismantle the Empire from within. He strategically cultivated the emperor’s favor while simultaneously leveraging the resources of the Black sun to undermine Vader’s influence.

“Vader suspected that the prince was playing a double game, but could not prove it,” one analyst noted. This delicate balancing act allowed Xizor to gain considerable power, all while masking his true intentions. He even learned of the connection between Vader and Luke Skywalker, attempting to exploit this vulnerability by targeting the young Jedi in an effort to discredit Vader before the Emperor.

A Failed Gambit and a Final Confrontation

Xizor’s scheme began to unravel when he encountered Princess Leia and Chewbacca, who were searching for Han Solo – frozen in carbonite following the events of Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back. He attempted to lure Luke Skywalker by taking them hostage, even employing pheromones to influence Leia. Though, the intervention of Lando Calrissian and others disrupted his plans.

forced to flee in his ship, the Virago, Xizor was intercepted by Darth Vader. Presented with a stark choice – surrender or die – Xizor, driven by his pride and unwavering commitment to revenge, refused to yield. This defiance led to his death, sparking a power struggle within the Black sun.

Unluckily, Xizor’s compelling story remains largely untold on the big screen. It’s a narrative that, according to many fans, deserves a cinematic adaptation, much like the desire expressed by the actor who played Kylo Ren for his own film, a project ultimately intricate by the conclusion of Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker.
