Amazon Rebrands Satellite Internet Project as “Amazon Leo,” Signaling Imminent Launch

Amazon is poised to directly challenge SpaceX’s Starlink with its satellite internet service, now officially rebranded as “Amazon Leo.” The move, announced this week, indicates the project is maturing and nearing a public launch, with over 100 satellites already in orbit.
Amazon first initiated its ambitious satellite internet project three years ago under the name “Kuiper.” The rebrand to “Amazon Leo” is intended to be more consumer-friendly, referencing the network’s low Earth orbit (LEO) constellation. According to a company release, the name is “a nod to the constellation of satellites in low Earth orbit” that comprise the network.
From Kuiper Belt to Consumer-Facing Brand
The original name, Kuiper, alluded to the Kuiper Belt, a distant region of the solar system. While suitable as a code name during the project’s initial phases – including licensing and prototype development – it lacked the broad appeal needed for a public-facing brand. “It is just a code name, not very suitable for communicating with the general public,” one analyst noted.
The transition from “Kuiper” to “Amazon Leo” underscores the project’s evolution. Amazon has already deployed more than 100 satellites toward its eventual goal of a 3,236-satellite constellation. This places it in direct competition with Starlink, a service that has already established a significant foothold in the satellite internet market.
Launch Timeline and Initial Coverage
While Amazon has not provided a firm launch date, the company intends to “deploy the service when we have added more coverage and capacity to the network.” Current estimates suggest a potential launch window in the coming months, potentially by the end of this year or early next year.
France is positioned to be among the first countries to benefit from the service, having already received official deployment authorization from Arcep. This strategic prioritization highlights Amazon’s focus on key European markets.
The rebranding to “Amazon Leo” signals a pivotal moment for Amazon’s foray into satellite internet. As the company continues to build out its constellation, the competition between Amazon and SpaceX is set to intensify, potentially reshaping the landscape of global internet access.
