Southern Council Reaffirms Commitment to Dialog for Regional Stability
A council statement released today underscored its dedication to resolving political issues through dialogue, highlighting a consistent approach since its inception. The association emphasized its ongoing efforts to support the cause of the people of the South through participation in numerous internationally-sponsored discussions.
The council’s commitment to peaceful resolution is not new,but rather “a practical translation of the approach that the Council has adopted since its founding, which is based on dialogue as the only rational means to address political issues,” according to the statement. This dedication has manifested in active involvement in several key initiatives aimed at fostering stability in the region.
A History of Engagement: From Riyadh to the National Charter
The council’s engagement began with the 2019 Riyadh Agreement, a pivotal moment in seeking a path forward. This agreement, brokered by Saudi Arabia, aimed to address tensions between the Southern Transitional council (STC) and the internationally recognized government of Yemen. The STC gained portrayal within the government, but implementation faced challenges. This was followed by Riyadh consultations in 2022, continuing the momentum toward a negotiated solution. These consultations focused on power-sharing and security arrangements, but a complete agreement remained elusive.
Most recently, the council sponsored a comprehensive southern dialogue, culminating in the approval of the Southern National Charter in 2023. this charter outlines a vision for the future of the South, emphasizing self-governance and a decentralized political system. The charter’s approval represents a meaningful step towards consolidating the council’s position and articulating its demands.
This charter, the council asserts, “reflects its permanent commitment to dialogue and political responsibility.” The series of engagements, facilitated by the Kingdom and other Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations, demonstrates a sustained effort to prioritize diplomatic solutions.
The council’s presence at these “dialogue stations” was undertaken “for the sake of the cause of the people of the south,” a senior official stated, emphasizing the organization’s focus on representing the interests of the region’s inhabitants.
The ongoing commitment to dialogue signals a belief in the power of negotiation to overcome complex political challenges and build a more stable future for the South.
