America’s top gymnasts are increasingly turning to a seemingly unassuming training ground – EVO Gymnastics – to hone their skills and mental fortitude in pursuit of championship success, including the upcoming Xfinity U.S. Championships in New Orleans this August.
The 99% Mental Game
The atmosphere at a recent inter-squad practice at EVO Gymnastics mirrored that of a legitimate competition, complete with the presence of decorated athletes like Brody Malone and Stephen Nedoroscik. Though, the focus wasn’t solely on flawless execution. As Syque Caesar, the Men’s Senior Elite head coach at EVO, explained, “We’re in that phase right now close to the competition where things don’t look perfect becuase we’re honing in on that mental strength and emotional stress that comes with competing.” Caesar emphasized the critical balance between physical prowess and mental resilience, stating, “You’ve probably heard the phrase 99% mental, 1% physical before.” These practice meets serve as crucial rehearsals, allowing athletes to navigate the pressures of competition without the weight of official results.
A Return to Form for Olympic Bronze Medalist
For Brody Malone, the practice marked a notable step in his return to peak performance. Following a prosperous showing at the 2024 Olympic Games where the united States secured a bronze medal, Malone has navigated a busy year that included the Gold Over America Tour alongside Simone Biles, his marriage to Serena Ortiz, and welcoming a new puppy. “I told my coach this year that I wanted to focus on being a person,” Malone shared. “My priority was not on gymnastics-I’m grateful for that, because gymnastics is a year-round sport. We don’t get a lot of opportunities to take time for ourselves.”
The Next Generation Steps Up
The U.S.Championships also represent a pivotal opportunity for EVO’s junior team members, Hunter Simpson and Jackson Kurecki. Both athletes, 17 and 16 years old respectively, balance online schooling with rigorous training at EVO and are already members of the U.S. National Junior team.Simpson, who placed second in the 2024 junior all-around competition, acknowledged the pressure but also expressed excitement.”I feel like I can show the new juniors the ropes,” he said.”It’s a really fun competition if you can get all the nerves out and stay focused.” Success at the championships will be vital for maintaining their positions on the national roster.
The path to championship success isn’t always smooth. Caesar highlighted the importance of addressing the mental challenges athletes face, even during practice. He recounted an instance with Stephen Nedoroscik, a 2024 national champion on pommel horse and Olympic bronze medalist, who struggled with a landing during the mock competition. “I had to remind him that it’s not always glorious,” Caesar explained. “The tough parts of the sport are tough, but they make the wins that much greater.” Caesar’s approach centered on encouragement and viewpoint, reminding Nedoroscik that setbacks are a natural part of the process and that enjoying the sport is paramount. “My message to him was number one, ‘I’m proud of what you’re doing.’ I know today didn’t go your way, but we’ve got a whole other shot at it next week. number two was ‘remember to have fun.’ I know that you’re the guy, you’re “clark Kent-superman” and you feel pressure from the media, but you’re human and that’s okay.”
EVO Gymnastics is sending a total of 11 male gymnasts – five Juniors and six Seniors – to the U.S. Championships, where they will compete for national titles and solidify their positions on the U.S. National teams for the coming year. The facility’s ability to cultivate both physical excellence and mental fortitude underscores its growing importance in the landscape of American gymnastics.
