Dr. Punam Krishnan Reveals Breast Cancer Diagnosis, Finds Strength After ‘Strictly’ Appearance
A beloved television personality and medical professional has bravely shared her private battle with breast cancer, sparking an outpouring of support from fans and colleagues.
Dr. Punam Krishnan, known for her appearance on the 2024 series of Strictly Come Dancing, revealed she received the devastating diagnosis five months ago. The doctor and TV star disclosed in a heartfelt Instagram post that she has been navigating a challenging emotional landscape since learning of her illness, admitting she has been “to some very dark places.” Despite the fear and uncertainty, Dr. Krishnan is facing her treatment “one day at a time.”
Alongside a photograph taken from her hospital bed, Dr. Krishnan penned a deeply personal message, stating: “Here goes … Five months ago, I heard the words nobody ever wants to hear: You have cancer.” She continued, “I still find it hard to write that sentence. But it’s my reality and my truth.”
The seasoned medical professional reflected on the irony of her situation, having spent nearly two decades supporting others through similar diagnoses. “I’ve spent almost two decades as a doctor, supporting patients and families through difficult diagnoses,” she wrote. “And yet, nothing – absolutely nothing – prepares you for being on the receiving end yourself. The shock. The fear. The trauma. In that moment, knowledge means very little.”
Dr. Krishnan was diagnosed with breast cancer and has since prioritized managing her health while protecting her family. “Since then, I’ve taken things one day at a time because that’s all I could do,” she explained. She expressed gratitude for the exceptional care she has received from the NHS, acknowledging the dedication of her GP, breast specialists, and oncology teams. “And still… it’s been really hard. Much harder than I ever imagined.”
Maintaining privacy during her treatment was a conscious decision, driven by a desire to safeguard her energy and, most importantly, her children. Dr. Krishnan emphasized the importance of her support network, stating, “My husband, my family and a small circle of friends have carried me through in ways I’ll never forget. When something like this happens, you realise very quickly what – and who – truly matters.”
The announcement quickly garnered a wave of supportive messages. One fan commented, “I’m so sorry you have had so much to deal with, and your lovely family too. One day at a time is all we have to focus on. Heal slowly and completely, and know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. Sending you so much support and love.” Another wrote, “I’m so, so sorry you’re going through this. How utterly terrifying. I’m so glad you’ve had love and support.”
Notably, fellow Strictly professional and breast cancer survivor Amy Dowden offered encouragement, writing, “You got this, pink sister. Sending so much love.” Fleur East, host of Strictly’s It Takes Two, expressed gratitude for Dr. Krishnan’s courage in raising awareness about early detection. Dr. Krishnan’s Strictly partner, Gorka Marquez, added, “I know you, and I know you will get through this. And we will be sat having a coffee and a croissant.”
Dr. Krishnan’s openness about her diagnosis serves as a powerful reminder of the challenges faced by those battling cancer and the vital importance of support, resilience, and early detection.
