Japan’s Rising Appeal for International Students: A Glimpse into Cultural Exchange and Future Insights
A growing number of students are choosing Japan for higher education, drawn by unique cultural experiences and the chance to study alongside peers from around the globe. Recent accounts from international scholars highlight both the challenges and rewards of academic life in Japan, and also the surprising parallels between Japan’s current situation and that of other developed nations.
A Return to the Land of the Rising Sun
For some, Japan isn’t a new destination, but a return to a place that sparked intellectual curiosity. One scholar, a DAAD scholarship holder who completed a bachelor’s degree in geography and communication and media studies at the University of Bremen, found herself drawn back to Japan for her master’s degree.Having previously spent a year in Japan as an exchange student, she is now pursuing a master’s in Global Environmental Studies at Sophia University in Tokyo.
“Living in Japan for a long time can be challenging, but it is sure to be a very beautiful and unique time,” she noted, emphasizing the importance of preparation and cultural openness for prospective students.
From India to Aachen, and Then to Japan
The appeal of Japan extends beyond those wiht prior experience. Another student, who arrived in Germany from India in 2021 to study Computational Engineering Science at RWTH Aachen, found that his time in Germany ultimately paved the way for his move to Japan.He described Aachen as a city with a vibrant international student population, where he served as head of the city’s intercultural association.
“This would not have been possible if I had studied in my home contry,” he stated, highlighting the personal growth fostered by intercultural engagement.After four years, he sought a new challenge – a different education system, culture, and language – and found Japan to be the ideal destination.
The Power of Language and Cultural Nuance
The student from India emphasized the profound impact of even a basic understanding of the Japanese language. he observed that even limited proficiency can unlock unexpected cultural insights and facilitate deeper connections with Japanese people. He finds himself captivated by the linguistic origins of Japanese words and expressions, believing they often reveal underlying cultural behaviors.
“often this leads to a deeper understanding of Japanese behaviors that may seem strange at first,but make perfect sense in the context of Japanese history,” he explained.

Interestingly, the student also drew parallels between the economic and demographic challenges facing Japan and Germany. He noted that these challenges are readily apparent upon arrival, impacting areas such as bureaucracy, the labor market, and digitalization.However, he also pointed out areas where Japan excels, specifically citing the efficiency of public transport and the prevalence of considerate behavior.
“Japan can therefore serve in many ways as an indicator and warning signal for Germany’s future progress, but also as an inspiration for Germany’s future,” he asserted. He encourages prospective students to look beyond the typical tourist attractions – the manga cafes and ramen shops – and consider Japan’s broader societal implications.
