Summer schools: quality and inclusive higher education

At the last World Conference on Higher Education (WHEC2022) organized by UNESCO in collaboration with the Government of Spain, the Generalitat of Catalonia, the Barcelona City Council and the Barcelona Provincial Council, the new panorama that the higher education, both in degrees and masters as well as in doctorates and summer courses.

Responding to the digital revolution and strengthening the objectives of the 2030 Agenda, a transformation of the higher education ecosystem is necessary in terms of quality, equity and inclusion. On the other hand, the great diversification of centers, including the appearance of private schools, as well as increasing academic mobility, have direct implications for provision, certification and quality assurance.

Along these lines, the summer schools are a great opportunity for international students who wish to broaden their knowledge and live an immersive experience in another country during the summer season, in addition to enjoying quality higher education and inclusive. On the other hand, it is a possibility for cities to form part of the global campus that the future of education requires.

In this sense, Barcelona is one of the most favorable destinations for this type of studies, since it has numerous highly specialized summer schools. In response to this need, TBS Education has different summer courses that train international students in order to complement their academic profiles and fill new professional positions related to business and technology. It should be noted that the student can opt for the full experience (6 weeks between Toulouse and Barcelona) or choose the option of 3 weeks of training in one of the two cities. The total number of students enrolled in the TBS Education Summer School has reached 71, which indicates a recovery after the COVID-19 crisis. “We have noticed a strong increase this year compared to 2021, when we had 47 students enrolled. It was a difficult time, but last year we already opted for the face-to-face program.” Of these 71, 22 have completed the complete program combining assistance between the Toulouse campus and the Barcelona campus, which means 6 weeks of training in total.

With regard to the multicultural environment, the greatest weight is from students from Colombia, with 23% of the students, followed by the United Kingdom, with 13%; Morocco and the United States, both countries with 10%; and Italy, with 8%.

Kyle Williams, from the USA, relates: “Before the Summer School I had never been outside my country and now, thanks to this experience, I really want to see more places. I have made deep bonds and genuine connections. This summer course has fulfilled all my expectations. I would do it again.”
