The ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 auction in Dubai saw the 2016 IPL champions Sunrisers Hyderabad make a decisive move by acquiring Australia’s World Cup hero Travis Head for Rs 6.80 crore. Initially, no team came forward for Travis Head, but Sunrisers Hyderabad stepped in and secured the talented all-rounder.
Head, who played a crucial role in Australia’s title win in the 2023 World Cup, was instrumental in securing victory for his team with a brilliant innings of 137 runs off 120 balls in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium. His outstanding performance led Australia to their sixth World Cup title, and he became the seventh batsman to score a century in a World Cup final. Travis Head also received Player of the Match awards in both the semi-final and final matches, showcasing his all-round excellence with 62 runs and two wickets against South Africa in the semi-final.
Despite his impressive World Cup performance and a strike rate of 146.17 in Twenty20s, Head did not fetch a huge base price in the IPL auction. He had previously played for Royal Challengers Bangalore for two seasons, appearing in ten matches and scoring 205 runs with a best score of 75 not out at an average of 29.29. Interestingly, no one had bid for Travis in IPL 2023 before his World Cup heroics.
Sunrisers Hyderabad’s acquisition of Travis Head has bolstered their front line and is a strategic move for the team in the upcoming IPL season.
