The Criminal Cassation Chamber of the Supreme Court made a decision in relation to the case of Luciano Marín Arango, known as alias ‘Iván Márquez’, who faces a 41-year prison sentence for crimes of aggravated homicide and aggravated terrorism.

In a recent resolution, the Supreme Court of Justice inadmissible the appeal presented by the defense of ‘Iván Márquez’, which means that his sentence is final. This sentence is related to the tragic events that occurred during the guerrilla takeover of July 14 and 15, 2000 in Roncesvalles, Tolimawhere a civilian and 13 police officers lost their lives.

The decision of the Supreme Court is based on the fact that the appeal does not meet the necessary requirements to be considered in a background study. Furthermore, the Court highlighted that the sentence imposed complies with the law and is supported by solid evidence.

One of the key points of the Court’s decision is that it was determined that ‘Iván Márquez’ had a determining role in the events of the taking of Roncesvalles, despite not being physically present at the location. According to the Criminal Cassation Chamber, ‘Iván Márquez’ was part of the FARC secretariat and gave direct orders that led to the armed incursion.

The Supreme Court ruling highlights that the evidence presented demonstrates that the Roncesvalles massacre was ordered by the FARC secretariat, of which ‘Iván Márquez’ was a part, and that this insurgent group was specialized in this type of actions under the guidelines from the top of the organization.

With this decision, the Supreme Court of Justice ratifies the responsibility of ‘Iván Márquez’ in the terrible events in Roncesvalles and reinforces the commitment of the Colombian judicial system to justice and respect for human rights.
