The Supreme Court has rejected a special petition filed by Ottakomban activists seeking stay of a High Court order banning their film. The film is directed by newcomer Mathews Thomas and stars Suresh Gopi in the lead role. The Supreme Court has rejected a petition filed by one-party activists challenging the district court’s verdict in a copyright case filed by Jinu Abraham, the screenwriter of Prithviraj starrer Shaji Kailas’ Tiger.
The apex court also directed the trial court to expedite the trial as it has decided not to intervene in the case filed against Unicorn. The apex court also directed that the case be settled within a year with the co-operation of both the parties. In April 2021, the High Court upheld an order of the District Court seeking an injunction restraining the production of the screenplay and the production and release of the film, which led to the alleged copyright infringement.
It is alleged that the script and character of Prithviraj starrer ‘Tiger’ were copied for copyright by Suresh Gopi. Director and screenwriter Jinu Abraham has penned the script for Tiger. The petitioner had earlier produced in court the documents including the registration of the name of the character ‘Kaduvakkunnel Kuruvachan’ under the Copyright Act. The plaintiffs also informed the court that all the scenes of the script of ‘Tiger’, including the name of the character, have been registered separately.
