Swedish Infrastructure Update: New Reserve Port Established in Kappelshamn due to Global Situations and NATO Membership

by time news

The global situation and NATO membership continue to affect the Swedish infrastructure. Today Visby harbor is considered to be the only one on Gotland with sufficient capacity. Therefore, a reserve port is needed, the government believes. Today it was decided that it should be located in Kappelshamn in northern Gotland.

– The security policy situation and the demands on our infrastructure mean that a reserve port on Gotland is required, both for supply reasons, for preparedness reasons and as a consequence of our membership in NATO, says infrastructure minister Andreas Carlson (KD) to SVT Nyheter.

Gotland is highly dependent on deliveries from the mainland, therefore the consequences would be great if Visby harbor could not be used.

The port is to be used both civilly and militarily

The reserve harbor is intended to have been used both civilly and militarily. If necessary, it must be able to receive ferry traffic and goods and supplies. It must also be able to receive military ships and transports, for example if the Armed Forces need to move personnel, vehicles and material to Gotland. It can also be about receiving support from other NATO countries.
