Swimming Restrictions Update in‍ Jurmala and Other Areas

Following the ⁢analysis of bathing water ‌samples collected in Jurmala, the VI (Environmental Inspection) has ⁢announced that the microbiological quality of the bathing ⁢water meets the established norms. This means that swimming is once again permitted in all the official swimming areas of Jurmala.

The previously issued recommendation to avoid swimming in the Riga swimming pool “Rumbula” has been lifted.

However, swimming remains prohibited in the following locations:

Lielupe right bank swimming pool in Jelgava Lielupe swimming pool due to ongoing floodwater drainage.
Lucavsala bay in Riga due to‌ significant cyanobacteria ⁤growth.

The swimming pool “Lipuški” in Rāzna lake remains closed due to ongoing construction ⁤work. Swimming is prohibited in the construction area⁤ during the swimming season.

Swimming is⁣ permitted in all other of the 55 official swimming areas.

The next water quality analysis of all official swimming areas⁤ will be conducted on August 26 and 27.

Water Quality Monitoring and Restrictions

Water samples from swimming areas are analyzed for two microbiological indicators:

Concentration of intestinal rods (Escherichia coli or E. coli)
Concentration of⁣ intestinal⁤ enterococci

These indicators help detect potential fecal‍ water⁣ contamination and the presence of pathogenic bacteria and viruses. Visual inspections assess water color, presence of floating waste and⁤ oil products,‌ and cyanobacteria growth.

Based on the results of these analyses, the VI determines whether swimming is allowed or restricts swimming in specific areas.

Important Information

Vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and those with ‌weakened immune systems are advised to exercise caution and follow any swimming restrictions.
