Sitting at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, waiting for my flight, the familiar feeling of SXSW exhaustion is setting in. Another year, another whirlwind of panels, parties and serendipitous encounters. It never feels like enough time to see and do everything you set out to, but after a week immersed in the creative energy of this city, few things sound as appealing as heading home. This year’s festival felt different, a recalibration after years of rapid growth and change. Yet, somewhere between the official sessions and the unofficial happenings, it was undeniably, completely SXSW.
The airport itself is a testament to the festival’s impact. Officials anticipated over 32,000 passengers departing on Tuesday, driven by the convergence of SXSW and spring break travel, according to MSN. Wednesday’s departures were expected to exceed 31,000, with the airport preparing for 5,000 to 7,000 more passengers than a typical Wednesday, as reported by CBS Austin. Security lines remained lengthy, prompting the opening of Checkpoint 2 to expedite the process. The airport is advising travelers to arrive at least 2.5 hours before domestic flights and three hours before international departures.
Navigating the Shifting Landscape of Tech and Culture
Some of the most compelling conversations this year centered around the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence. Adam Aleksic presented a thought-provoking analysis of how large language models (LLMs) are subtly altering human language and behavior. Andrew Warden, meanwhile, argued that prioritizing brand safety can inadvertently lead to brand invisibility – a crucial point in an increasingly crowded digital landscape. The presence of California Governor Gavin Newsom added another layer of intrigue, with his session, framed as a podcast recording, taking on the air of an unofficial campaign launch, though he has not yet announced a run for higher office.
The Power of Serendipity and Connection
But SXSW isn’t just about the headliners and scheduled events. The most memorable moments often arise from unexpected encounters. I randomly ran into Tim Molnar at a popular lunch spot, which led to an insightful session on the importance of human connection that I wouldn’t have otherwise attended. It was also a pleasure to reconnect with my old friend, Nic Roemer, after a long period apart. These unplanned interactions are a hallmark of the SXSW experience.
Beyond the professional sphere, the festival offered opportunities to strengthen personal bonds. I spent time with John and his family from East Austin, whom I first met years ago through an Airbnb rental and now consider friends. These connections, forged over shared experiences, are what truly produce SXSW special.

Witnessing their excitement and fresh perspectives reminded me why I fell in love with the festival in the first place. Catching up with colleagues Pedro Martins and Daniel Lipman from our UK team added another layer of joy to the experience.
