“Every second counted,” stated the Marine Area Command commander, Superintendent Joseph McNulty, during a press conference. He lauded the actions of the boy’s friends, describing their response as “nothing but brave, a gallant recovery from his mates there.” The friends immediately entered the water and pulled the injured boy to safety.

[He’s] not out of the woods yet,” Buchanan stated.
