Synbiotics & Diabetes: Lowering Risk Factors

A new study suggests a synbiotic supplement-combining probiotics and prebiotics-delivered measurable improvements in weight, blood sugar control, and heart health markers in older adults with type 2 diabetes. It’s a fascinating glimpse into how tinkering with the gut microbiome might become a standard part of managing age-related metabolic decline.

Gut Health Boosts Cardiometabolic Health in Seniors

A synbiotic supplement showed promising results in improving weight, blood sugar, and cardiovascular risk factors in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes.

  • A four-month trial involving 96 participants aged 65 and older revealed significant benefits from a multi-species synbiotic.
  • Participants taking the synbiotic lost an average of 1.16 kg (2.56 lbs) more then those receiving a placebo.
  • Improvements were also observed in fasting blood glucose, insulin resistance, cholesterol levels, and markers of vascular inflammation.
  • No serious adverse events were reported during the study, suggesting a safe profile for this intervention.

What does this mean for managing type 2 diabetes? synbiotic supplementation may offer a safe and effective way to improve metabolic health and reduce cardiovascular risk in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes. The study, published in Nutrition & Diabetes, found that the synbiotic group experienced a decrease in body fat mass of 0.99 kg, while lean body mass remained stable-a crucial factor for older adults, where muscle loss can contribute to frailty.

Metabolic and cardiovascular Improvements

The synbiotic group also demonstrated clear metabolic advantages. fasting plasma glucose levels fell by 22.83 mg/dl compared to the placebo, and insulin resistance improved, as indicated by a 1.31 reduction in the homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR).

Cardiovascular risk markers also showed positive changes. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol decreased by 10.83 mg/dl, and total cholesterol fell by 11.78 mg/dl.

Furthermore, levels of vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1)-a marker of endothelial dysfunction and vascular inflammation-were reduced by 85.70 ng/L in the synbiotic group compared to the placebo. Importantly, no serious adverse events were reported throughout the trial.

The authors concluded that multi-species synbiotic supplementation can deliver modest, yet clinically meaningful, improvements in weight, lipid levels, glycaemic control, and vascular inflammation in elderly patients with T2DM. They propose that synbiotics could be a safe addition to current strategies for reducing cardiovascular risk in this growing population.
