Deadly Israeli Raid in Syria Kills At Least 13, Escalating Regional Tensions

Israel’s military operation in the Syrian village of Beit Jin on Friday resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, including women and children, marking the deadliest Israeli attack on syrian soil since forces gained control of a portion of the country a year ago. Syrian Accounts of a Deadly Incursion
According to reports from Syrian officials and the state news agency SANA,Israeli forces raided Beit Jin with the stated intention of detaining local men. Though, the situation quickly deteriorated when residents confronted the troops, leading to an outbreak of violence. A local official, Walid Okasha, reported to The Associated Press that all those killed were civilians. Among the victims were a newly married couple and thier two children,along with the children’s uncle and another man who had recently tied the knot.
“whenever anyone moved inside the village, or any car moved, it would get hit,” a Beit Jin resident, Firas daher, recounted, describing the intensity of the Israeli response. “When we tried to take injured people to the hospital, they struck the car carrying them.” The Syrian Foreign Ministry has labeled the attack a “horrific massacre,” and dozens of families have been forced to flee the area.
Israel’s Justification for the Operation
Israel maintains that the operation was aimed at apprehending members of the Jamaa Islamiya militant group, who were allegedly planning improvised explosive device (IED) and rocket attacks into Israel. Israeli officials stated that militants opened fire on troops,injuring six soldiers,prompting a return of fire with aerial support.The military claims the operation has concluded, with all suspects detained and several militants killed.
A History of Israeli Operations in Southern Syria
The recent raid is part of a pattern of Israeli military activity in southern Syria that began in December 2024, following the fall of former Syrian President Bashar Assad.Israeli forces have since seized a stretch of territory that was previously part of a UN-monitored buffer zone established under a 1974 disengagement agreement.
Since then, Israeli troops have conducted regular operations within and beyond the zone, targeting individuals accused of being militants. Israel has also carried out hundreds of airstrikes on Syrian military sites and has advocated for a demilitarized area south of Damascus. Local resistance to these raids has been met with force on multiple occasions. In April, an Israeli raid on the town of Nawa resulted in nine deaths after locals challenged the troops, and in march, six people were killed during similar clashes in koayiah. A previous raid in Beit Jin in June led to the detention of individuals Israel identified as Hamas members – a claim disputed by local residents – and the death of a man whose family reported he suffered from schizophrenia.
