Syria and US Vow Continued Counterterrorism Cooperation After Deadly Palmyra attack

A deadly ambush by a Daesh gunman in the Palmyra desert area on Saturday resulted in the deaths of two U.S. troops and a civilian, with three other service members sustaining injuries, according to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM). The attack, intended to disrupt the burgeoning relationship between Syria and the United States, was the focus of a phone call Sunday between Syrian foreign Minister asaad al-Shaibani and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
During the conversation, both diplomats agreed that the “fearful act” was a deliberate attempt to undermine the newly developing Syrian-U.S. relationship. shaibani characterized the attack as a significant challenge in the ongoing fight against terrorism,emphasizing the critical need for close collaboration with international partners,particularly the U.S., to strengthen joint counterterrorism efforts.

Rubio, in turn, reaffirmed continued U.S. support for the Syrian government, encompassing cooperation on counterterrorism, initiatives to bolster regional stability, and measures designed to foster economic recovery.
A statement released by the U.S. State Department confirmed the call, noting that Shaibani reiterated Damascus’ commitment to “degrade and destroy the shared threat of ISIS,” another name for Daesh. A spokesperson, Tommy Pigott, stated, “The united States will hold all who hurt and threaten Americans accountable,” echoing a vow from President Trump to inflict significant damage on those responsible for the attack.
Following the attack near the ancient city of Palmyra, syrian authorities launched a security operation Sunday targeting Daesh cells in the Homs province countryside. U.S. forces have been operating in Syria as part of an international coalition formed in 2014 to combat Daesh, with Syria officially joining the coalition on November 12th of this year.
