1936: Ödön von Horváth’s play “Faith Love Hope” is premiered in Vienna.
1941: The German submarine “U 81” sunk the British aircraft carrier “Ark Royal”, which was only commissioned in 1938, almost 30 nautical miles off Gibraltar. The crew can get to safety from the sinking.
1956: The US Supreme Court declares racial segregation on public transport unconstitutional.
1971: The US probe “Mariner-9”, launched on May 30th, goes into orbit around the planet Mars after a 400 million kilometer journey.
1976: Two days of violent clashes between police and demonstrators began in front of the planned German nuclear power plant in Brokdorf on the Lower Elbe.
1981: The actor Karlheinz Böhm founds the aid organization Menschen für Menschen.
2001: The associations of the US-backed Afghan Northern Alliance move into the capital Kabul. Previously, Taliban troops had fled towards Kandahar and Jalalabad.
2001: US President George W. Bush announced at a joint press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Washington that around two thirds of nuclear weapons would be dismantled. The next day, Putin promises an analogous reduction in Russian arsenals.
2001: The “Education Offensive and Tuition Fees Referendum” was signed by 173,594 people, that is 2.98 percent of those entitled to vote.
2011: Provikar Carl Lampert is raised to the status of the blessed in the Dornbirn town church St. Martin. This means that the priest who was murdered by the Nazis in 1944 can be officially venerated.
