The 82.0% approval rating represents a significant jump of 38.3 percentage points from the 43.7% recorded for the previous Ishiba Cabinet. Only the Koizumi cabinet as 2001 has achieved a higher approval rating. However, 14.3% of respondents indicated they could not support the current government. This initial wave of support suggests a public appetite for change and confidence in Prime Minister Takaichi’s leadership.
Diplomatic Successes and the Japan-U.S. Alliance
Prime Minister Takaichi’s “diplomatic debut” – a recent summit with U.S. President Trump and other international leaders – has been widely praised. A striking 83% of those surveyed “appreciated” her diplomatic efforts, with observers highlighting the emphasis on “the unwavering Japan-U.S. alliance.” This focus on strengthening ties with key allies appears to be resonating with the Japanese public.
Coalition Support and Legislative Agenda
The coalition government formed between the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and the Nippon Ishin no Kai also enjoys considerable public backing. 52% of respondents expressed their “recognition” for the coalition, while 29% disapproved. The two parties have agreed to prioritize a bill to reduce the number of representatives in the House of Representatives by 10% during the current Diet session. while there is support for this measure, opinions are divided on the timeline, with 48% advocating for passage by the end of the year and 35% believing there is no immediate need for action.
Economic and Security Policies Garner Support
Prime Minister takaichi’s economic policies are also receiving a positive reception. When asked about the potential for economic improvement under her administration, 58% expressed optimism, while 23% were skeptical.The administration’s commitment to a “responsible and proactive fiscal policy” and strategic fiscal spending appears to be instilling confidence.
Moreover, the decision to accelerate the increase in defense spending to 2% of GDP – achieving the target within the current fiscal year, two years ahead of schedule – is supported by 56% of respondents, with 33% expressing opposition. A significant 64% also favor the consideration of relaxing upper limits on working hours, as instructed by Prime Minister Takaichi to Minister of Health, Labor and Welfare Ueno.
Rising Prices and Policy Priorities
Addressing rising prices is a key concern for the government, and public opinion reveals clear priorities.The most favored policy to combat inflation is a “zero consumption tax on foodstuffs,” followed by “reducing social insurance premiums for the working generation.”

JNN emphasizes the use of telephone interviews,conducted by researchers rather than automated machines,to minimize bias and achieve a more accurate “microcosm of voters.” The survey methodology also prioritizes random selection within households to avoid age-related biases in landline sampling.
