Taylor Swift Unveils Extended “Opalite” Music Video, Offering Behind-the-Scenes Glimpses and Star-Studded Stories
Taylor Swift is giving fans an even deeper dive into the world of “Opalite,” releasing two extended cuts of the 1990s-inspired music video at midnight on Friday. The superstar shared the expanded versions, brimming with unseen footage, on streaming platforms, promising a comprehensive look at the “hysterical shoot” and all its details.
Swift announced the release via an Instagram post, stating, “I never want to forget a single detail of this hysterical shoot, and now I don’t have to.” The extended cuts, as Swift described, are “full of dance lessons, our phenomenal cameos, camcorder footage, gigantic scrunchies & fanny pack angles.”
From Graham Norton to the Fake Mall: The Genesis of “Opalite”
Part one of the extended version reveals the surprising origin of the video’s concept. Swift shares how an appearance on The Graham Norton Show with a remarkable ensemble – Cillian Murphy, Greta Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith, Domhnall Gleeson, Lewis Capaldi, and Graham Norton himself – sparked the idea. Interestingly, while Murphy wasn’t physically present during filming, he made a cameo “in spirit” as a poster within the video’s fabricated mall setting.
The story takes a humorous turn as the footage revisits a moment from the cast’s October appearance on The Graham Norton Show. Domhnall Gleeson playfully expressed his desire to be featured in a Taylor Swift music video. The extended version captures the reactions of Greta Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith, and Lewis Capaldi, who admit they were all thinking the same thing. “Thank god because I think we were all thinking it,” Turner-Smith remarked while in her aerobics instructor costume. Gleeson himself was astonished that his offhand comment resonated with Swift, recalling someone asking him afterward, “‘Did you see Taylor’s face after you said that?’… I was like, ‘There’s no way she’s thinking about it,’” only to be proven wrong.
Dance Lessons and Directorial Debut
Despite securing a role, Gleeson was reportedly caught off guard by the requirement to dance. “This dance thing is new. I want everyone to know that,” he confessed in the behind-the-scenes footage. Throughout the first extended cut, Swift playfully celebrates her brunette hairstyle, declaring it “Honestly, my best look ever” while filming with a camcorder. She is also seen refining the video’s choreography alongside choreographer Mandy Moore.
Swift further elucidates the video’s core concept, which employs an infomercial format to promote “Opalite” – “the revolutionary fix for your problems.” The product is touted as capable of “magically transform[ing] your problems into your paradise using our state-of-the-art chemical potion,” applicable to friendships, relationships, pets, and even workplace dynamics. In her own words, Swift distinguishes between the two products: “Nope-alite is for people who want to choose to be unhealed, Opalite is for people who want to choose a path that serves them.”
Swift Takes the Helm and Prieto Reflects on Collaboration
The second extended version showcases Swift’s directorial prowess as she guides Capaldi, Turner-Smith, and Lee through their cameo appearances. Graham Norton provides insight into Swift’s meticulous process, noting, “The treatment was so detailed, and it’s so close to what we’re actually doing, and I think that’s quite a rare thing.”
Cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto, a frequent collaborator with Swift, shared his appreciation for their evolving working relationship. A candid moment captured Swift testing a fanny pack camera angle, prompting a humorous reaction from Prieto. “He is so sick of my shit,” Swift laughed, acknowledging his playful exasperation.
The decision to release the extended versions exclusively on streaming platforms mirrors Swift’s previous strategy with the original “Opalite” video, following YouTube’s withdrawal of data from Billboard charts. The original music video was uploaded to YouTube a couple of days after its initial premiere, and fans are hopeful the extended cuts will follow suit.
