The former NFL standout Ted Ginn Jr. is embarking on a new chapter in his football career, transitioning from the field to the sidelines. On Wednesday, the United Football League’s (UFL) Columbus Aviators announced Ginn as their next head coach, marking his debut as a leader in the professional ranks.
Ginn, a native of Cleveland, Ohio – approximately two hours north of Columbus – brings a wealth of experience to the role, despite being a first-time coach. He expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity, stating, “Today marks a new milestone in my football journey. When I heard that the United Football League was going to have a football team in Columbus, I wanted to be a part of creating a new winning tradition in this city that is such an important part of my life. I can’t wait to start building this team and I ask football fans throughout the state to join the Aviators as they take flight.”
A New Era for the Aviators and the UFL
The Columbus Aviators are one of three expansion teams joining the UFL for the upcoming season, alongside the Louisville Kings and the Orlando Storm. These franchises will replace the Michigan Panthers, Memphis Showboats, and San Antonio Brahmas as the league looks to build on its foundation. The UFL aims to serve as a developmental platform, with a clear pathway for players to reach the NFL, as evidenced by ongoing tracking of player movement to NFL rosters.
From Ohio State Star to 14-Year NFL Veteran
Ginn’s football journey began at Ohio State University, where he quickly established himself as a dynamic playmaker. During his time with the Buckeyes (2004-2006), he showcased his exceptional abilities as both a receiver and a return specialist. He returned four punt returns for touchdowns in his freshman season alone, and amassed six punt return touchdowns over his three years. As a receiver, he consistently produced, averaging 55 receptions for 792 yards and 6.5 touchdowns per season. He even contributed in the running game on occasion.
Selected ninth overall in the 2007 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins, Ginn enjoyed a successful 14-year career that included stints with several prominent franchises. He found particular success as a returner, finishing his career with three kick return touchdowns and four punt return touchdowns. His receiving prowess was also evident, surpassing 700 receiving yards in four separate seasons (2008, 2015, 2016, and 2017), including a career-high 790 receiving yards in 2008.
A Journey Through Multiple NFL Franchises
Following his time in Miami, Ginn’s career took him to the San Francisco 49ers (2010-2012), followed by two separate tenures with the Carolina Panthers (2013 and 2015-2016). He also had brief stints with the Arizona Cardinals (2014) and the Chicago Bears (2020), and a three-year run with the New Orleans Saints (2011-2019).
Perhaps the pinnacle of his playing career came in 2015 with the Panthers, where he reached Super Bowl 50 and led the team – and posted a career-best – with 10 receiving touchdowns.
Now, Ginn is poised to translate his extensive playing experience and passion for the game into a coaching career, hoping to build a winning culture in Columbus.
