The architect Josep Miàs wins the Architizer A+ award for the Tibidabo funicular

The Banyol architect Josep Miàs has taken away one of the international Architizer A+ Awards with the Cuca de Llum, the funicular of the Tibidabo amusement park. The work of Miàs, one of the Catalan architects with more international echohas been recognized as the best sustainable transport project in the eleventh edition of the awards of the online architecture platform Architizer.

The awards, which have awards chosen by a professional jury and others chosen in a popular voting process, recognize projects in the field of architecture, design and innovation. for the first time, in this edition they also recognize means of transport that incorporate sustainable systems and materials and that and follow best practices related to ethical design, construction and operations.

“Architecture’s response must be really belligerent and uncomfortable”

La Cuca de Llum, which won the popular award in this category, launched in 2021 to replace the historic Tibidabo funicular, inaugurated in 1901, and connect the city of Barcelona with the amusement park. The design of the Miàs office was used to update the infrastructure, which was the first funicular in the State, and it was conceived as another attraction of the Tibidabo parkwith a panoramic convoy to enjoy the views of the Catalan capital.

From Banyoles to the Pompidou, and from Paris to home

The funicular project competed with the Vendôme Multimodal Hub interchange, a design made by the Bisson Fortin and Provencher studio for the Montreal metro; the One Green Mile urban project in Mumbai, designed by the Studio POD agency, which won the Jury Prize and the Casa Sui by Nídia Duarte Architecture.

Another Catalan design, the Loom plaça Catalunya flexible office project by the architecture studio SCOB, also received another of the A+ Award 202, also with the public’s vote. The complex, located in Plaça Catalunya in Barcelona, ​​belongs to the flexible offices division of Merlin Properties and rediscovers the 19th century building Casa Pich i Pon, designed by the architect Puig i Cadafalch at the beginning of the 20th century.
