The sanction fell on Tuesday and the people who attacked the Turkish referee on Monday evening were placed behind bars.

The perpetrators of the attacks against a football referee in Ankara, including the president of the first division club Ankaragücü, were placed in detention, Turkish Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunç announced on Tuesday.

Acts that shock

«Following statements collected by the General Prosecutor’s Office of Ankara-West, the suspects (…) were placed in detention», announced the minister, the day after this incident which caused intense emotion in Turkey and throughout the world of football. According to the private news agency DHA, the three men were taken to Sincan prison, on the outskirts of Ankara.

Monday at the end of the match between Ankaragücü and Rizespor (1-1), the president of the Ankara club Faruk Koca rushed onto the pitch to deliver a powerful punch to the face of the referee of the match, Halil Umut Meler. The Rize club (north) had just equalized in added time and Ankaragücü had been denied a goal earlier in the match.

Falling to the ground, the referee was then kicked several times in the face by at least two other men, and suffered head trauma. During the night, the Ankaragücü club presented its “apologies to the supporters (…) and to the entire sporting community for this sad incident».
