The Bangladeshi government has backtracked on its decision to make the beach exclusively for women. The government has officially withdrawn the decision following strong criticism on social media and outside that it was a move to appease the growing Islamic fundamentalists in the country.

The women-only beach at Cox’s Bazar, which the government launched on Thursday, has now been relocated to a new location, with beaches where men and women interact, generally threatening women’s safety.

The government had earlier renamed the 150-meter section of Cox’s Bazar beach in Bangladesh exclusively for women. A special beach project has been set up here to ensure that the beach is completely safe for women and children to visit. The decision was welcomed by some Islamist groups.

This was followed by a flurry of criticism, including on social media. The government has been criticized for turning Bangladesh into a Taliban stronghold in favor of radical Islamic fundamentalists.

Another criticism was that Islamists want a Bangladesh where men and women do not see each other and that the government is fertilizing it. At the same time, government sources explained that the beach was brought only for women because some women demanded it.
