Video footage of the hurricane passing through the city of Andover in the US state of Kansas has been released.
The hurricane, which struck 22 kilometers outside the city of Wichita, damaged several homes and buildings.
The power outage also left thousands stranded in the dark. A local said the hurricane swirled terribly as it passed through the counties of Butler and Sedwiz.
City Mayor Whipple said 50 to 100 buildings were damaged in the city of Wichita and the areas where the victims were staying.
