Skyreacher is visible from afar. The monstrous yellow crawler crane stretches into the sky over Chandler, a suburb of Phoenix, Arizona. It is the most powerful crane of its kind, capable of lifting the weight of more than 400 adult elephants. It actually has the model name LR 13,000, but because it is so impressive, there was a naming competition among students in Chandler and the choice fell on Skyreacher.

The crane, of which there are only seven in the world, had a long journey to its current location in the Arizona desert. It was built in Ehingen, Swabia, at a factory owned by the Swiss Liebherr Group. From there it was shipped in pieces, across the Atlantic through the Panama Canal to Los Angeles, then on 170 flatbed trucks to Arizona, where it took a month to reassemble it. Here he now has a mission of national importance: Together with a whole series of smaller cranes, he is helping to build two factories for the chip manufacturer Intel, and it is precisely such projects that the American government wants to support with huge subsidies. The Chips and Science Act passed last year provides almost $53 billion to strengthen the United States as a location for the semiconductor industry. Intel hopes to get a hefty sum for its mega-investment.
