The protests of March 17 in Cuba continue to generate analysis and reflections, and this time the renowned writer Leonardo Padura Fuentes has shared his impressions from Spain, where he is currently.

Padura highlighted that the demonstrations are an expression of the “historical fatigue” that exists on the island, an accumulation of frustrations and needs that finally found their boiling point last Sunday.

“People deserve to live better after so many sacrifices and I hope that there is no repressive response from the Government and the Cuban State with these protesters,” he stressed.

He noted that the demands go beyond electricity problems and food shortages, as cries for freedom were also heard.

The internationally renowned author stressed the need for changes in the Cuban socio-political-economic system, a position that he has reiterated at different times, pointing out the shortcomings and unfulfilled promises that have characterized life on the island.

“What is evident is that the Cuban socio-political-economic system needs changes,” he told the EFE agency.

Padura recalled the immigration crisis that has affected Cuba in recent years, with hundreds of thousands of people seeking new opportunities in the United States, often through illegal and expensive routes. He highlighted that this massive migration reflects the discontent and difficulties faced by many Cubans.

The writer also mentioned the precarious living conditions faced by a large part of the population, with shortages of basic foods and difficulties in accessing essential medicines.

Leonardo Padura’s words reflect a general feeling of dissatisfaction and the urgency of profound changes in Cuba.
