Recently, many reports have come out about the ingredients contained in many cosmetic products causing kidney diseases. Now the unfortunate experience of a twenty-six-year-old woman who had hair straightening has come to light. Kidney disease was detected during the examination conducted during the health problems after hair straightening in the salon. A young woman from Tunisia had a bad experience.

Hair straightening is dangerous for young women who have not had any health problems before. In June 2020, the woman came to the salon for hair straightening. Done in April 20121 and July 2022. The girl later clarified that every time the hair treatment was over, she felt vomiting, diarrhea, fever and back pain. The girl said that during the straightening process, she felt stretch marks on her scalp and after that, cuts were formed.

A group of doctors from France have published about the health problem of the young woman in The New England Journal of Medicine. Doctors said that on further examination, the woman’s blood level of creatine was increased, which was a sign of kidney failure. Traces of blood were also seen in the urine.

The woman used a straightening cream containing the chemical glyoxylic acid. After this, doctors conducted studies on glyoxylic acid and kidney damage. After experiments on rats, doctors found that the problem might be that glyoxylic acid reached the kidneys through the skin. The same straightening cream used on the young woman from the salon was tested on mice. And the same process was tested on other mice using petroleum jelly. After that, within twenty-eight hours, the level of creatine in the blood of the rats that used the straightening cream was found to be higher. However, nothing unusual was found in those using petroleum jelly.

Doctors said that it is preferable not to use cosmetic products containing glyoxylic acid and to remove them from the market.

Recently, news of two people suffering from kidney disease after using fake skin whitening creams came out from Raigad. Two people diagnosed with Membranous Nephropathy, a rare kidney disease, were tested and found to be the culprit. In Malappuram too, news of eight people suffering from kidney disease was reported due to a similar incident.
