/ The British newspaper The Guardian reported on Thursday that a “mysterious tunnel” was discovered by chance near a prison in the French capital, Paris.

The British newspaper quoted a police source as saying that the tunnel was discovered the day before Tuesday, by a technician from the Enedis company, which manages the electricity distribution network in France, while she was working in a well for electrical connections about 450 meters from La Santé prison.

The source added that “bags of rubble and a bed” were found at the scene of the accident.

Guillaume Durand, an official in the 14th district of the French capital, where the prison is located, said he doubted the existence of a detailed escape plan.

The official continued, “The tunnel is four meters long and is located in a dead end on La Sante Street, but more than 500 meters away from the prison.”

He continued, “The police believe that this tunnel is linked to the work of secret explorers of the catacombs, which are underground passages in which the dead were buried or in which their remains and bones were kept,” noting that officials sent an engineer to the site to fill the hole.

The Paris Catacombs, a massive underground cemetery, are one of the city’s most popular attractions, attracting about 500,000 visitors annually.
