The Revelation of Sita: The Story of Mahalakshmi’s Incarnation as a Child

Once upon a time, Goddess Lakshmi was sitting in front of Kundati and worshiping. At that time, Ravana, the Lankesvara, was traveling through the sky sitting in his pushpaka vimana. Accidentally looking down, he caught sight of Goddess Lakshmi sitting in front of Yagakund. Infatuated by seeing her disaster, Ravana flew down with the intention of reaching her. He approached Lakshmi and tried to chat with her. Goddess Lakshmi, who could not bear his trouble, suddenly descended into the Yagunda fire and disappeared.

Ravana left the warriors who came with him and put water in the Yaga Kund to extinguish the Yaga. Then he asked to dig the place. When the warriors dug up the Yaga Gundam, Ravana found a gem that was eye-catching. He put the precious stone in a beautiful ark and took it with him and left for Sri Lanka. On reaching the palace of Sri Lanka, Ravana left the ark containing the precious stone in the puja room and came out. After the meal, Ravana and his consort Mandothari sat in the schoolroom. While conversing, Ravana said to Mandothari, “A gift in a casket in the puja room I have the gift, you go open the ark and take the gift.” Mandothari eagerly went to the puja room and opened the coffin and was stunned. There was no precious stone in the ark. A beautiful little girl was lying kicking her arms and legs and smiling. Then a loud voice rang out in the sky.

The voice declared that the child was Mahalakshmi and that she would come to kill Ravana in the future. The voice also warned that any attempt to harm the child would bring destruction upon Ravana and his kingdom. Frightened, Ravana handed over the jeweled ark containing the child to his attendants and ordered it to be carried far away and buried in the ground. The servants took the ark containing the child and traveled a long distance, where they buried it in the land bordering the city of Mithila.

Years later, the land where the ark was buried was donated to a Vediyar for the Yaga he conducted. When a farmer was plowing the land, the tip of the plow got stuck under the ground and stopped. Upon digging the place, an ark was revealed. The Vediyar was informed of the discovery and took the ark back to the palace. At the command of the king, the servants opened the ark, revealing a dazzling flash of light and a beautiful baby girl. The Vediyar and the congregation believed it was a divine child, Mahalakshmi herself come in the form of a child, and decided to take responsibility and bring her up.

Janaka Mamannan happily accepted the responsibility of bringing up Mahalakshmi, who had incarnated as a child. As the child grew, it was revealed that she was the incarnation of Sita, the beloved wife of Lord Rama. The story of Mahalakshmi’s incarnation as Sita, and her eventual marriage to Lord Rama, has been celebrated through the ages in the epic tale of the Ramayana.
