The dolphin came ashore and the bathers returned it to the water, the rescue attempts failed and it died

by time news

This morning (Saturday) a report was received about a dolphin that was recorded near Polg Beach. The director of the sea turtle rescue center at the Nature and Parks Authority, Yaniv Levy, and the chief handler, Guy Avgi, arrived and picked up the dolphin at the rescue center in an attempt to check its condition and treat it.

The Nature and Gardens Authority stated that it is a dolphin of the striped Stenella species. Possibly the same one seen in the last few days. After a short time the dolphin came ashore, but was returned to the water by bathers. Since then he has been seen swimming near the shore. The rescue attempts were unsuccessful and the dolphin died.

Dr. Aviad Sheinin from the Delphis association, director of the supercarnivore field at the Maurice Kahn Marine Research Station of the University of Haifa, emphasizes that Stenella is a deep-sea species, and when it reaches the shore this means that it is very sick. “We ask not to approach the dolphin when it is swimming in the sea, and if it has come ashore – keep it in the water until a professional arrives.”
