The ecological vision of Nicaise Moulombi at the Inclusive National Dialogue

12 avril 2024

The Inclusive National Dialogue continues at the Angondjé Stadium, in the north of the Gabonese capital. Participants work in committee and sub-committee. Nicaise Moulombi, a civil society actor and specialist in environmental issues, highlights her ecological vision in the service of said Dialogue.

You have taken an active part in the Inclusive National Dialogue since its official launch by the President of the Transition Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, on April 2 in Libreville. In your opinion, what can be the consequences of the conflict with nature and wildlife?

At least two consequences of the Man-Nature conflict. The first is the devastation of plantations by wild animals which affects the nutritional resources of village communities and increases poverty in rural areas. The second is the human-wildlife conflict which exacerbates poaching and risks leading to a reduction in the population size of species in danger of extinction. The absence of elephants in our forests, for example, risks in turn affecting the regeneration of forests and therefore the goods and services that they provide to humans.

What about global warming?

Global warming is a major problem for all of humanity. It modifies the living conditions of populations and increases the risks of flooding and intensive droughts, thus reducing our agricultural capacity and our well-being. Another major risk of global warming is the reduction in fruit production of forest tree species which are the source of food for elephants and other animal species which will then increasingly invade village areas and therefore, exacerbate a plus man-wildlife conflict.

What about logging and sustainable development?

The forest is the only source of renewable wealth that we have in our country. Forestry exploitation based on the principles of sustainable management should therefore be promoted because it guarantees the renewal of the resource for future generations.
