The mini series inspired by a 1998 news story with the Oscar-winning actress arrives on Sky

May 1998. Susan and Christopher Edwards, an extravagant, kind-mannered English couple, a lover of Western films, kill her parents in cold blood, bury their bodies in the garden and flee to France, where she lives draining the victims’ bank accounts. Fifteen years later the truth comes out. The bodies are found, the investigations lead to the two, who are constituted. A past of abuse emerges, resulting in the crime. In 2014 the couple was sentenced to 25 years in prison.

Now this story is told in
«LandscapersAn almost perfect crime “
, miniseries in four episodes from 14 January on Sky and streaming on NOW, and which sees protagonists Olivia Colman e David Thewlis directed by Will Sharpe, from a screenplay edited by the actress’s husband «The Crown», Ed Sinclair.

Did you know the history of the Edwards before filming this series?
“Yes, because my husband had read it in the “Guardian” and he was fascinated by it, an incredible story – begins Colman -. So he wrote a script, he wasn’t the only one, at that time, to think about bringing this news story to the screen, I’m glad it was his idea that prevailed ».

It is the story of two atypical killers.
“Susan and Christopher Edwards are two aliens, two people not made for this world. Completely devoted to each other. There aren’t many couples who have such a relationship, without external influences, only with extraordinary mutual attention ».

Sometimes too much love can be dangerous?
“There are horrendous criminal stories committed by loving couples. It is the conditioning of each other that leads to crimes that they would probably never have committed on their own “.

Tipo Bonnie & Clyde?
“I don’t think Susan and Christopher belong to this kind of criminal. We will never know what happened that night in 1998 but I am convinced that it is the tragic conclusion of a story of long abuse by Susan’s family, therefore of an unrepeatable crime. Something terrible happened but I really don’t think those two have a criminal mind, and indeed I am convinced that if they could have gone back they would have acted differently. It is not a question of a sadistic couple, of those able to feel some form of pleasure in inflicting suffering on others ».

Do you feel some empathy?
“It was all in the script, which told of two people in love with a morbid relationship, I limited myself to interpreting.”

There is also something surreal in the film. There is a scene in which the couple is immersed in a western movie, a genre that was the passion of the two.
“We are British, the western is not part of our world so it was weird and fun to shoot that scene. We were in a small village in Surrey, where there is a “western town”. It’s so small it’s not even on the maps. A regression to childhood, when we played cowboys and Indians ».

There is also a lot of humor in the story.
“Black, though. It is a very human trait to find the funny side of strange or even tragic facts. I am very proud of my husband, that script is brilliant ».

Is this your first time working together?
“Yes, and I must say that it went well, it was not taken for granted.”

Did he give you advice on interpretation?
“No, he is not allowed. I am happy to take advice from everyone else, but, for some reason, not from my husband. And he learned it early on, from the first auditions, if he suggested an approach in a certain way, I said no. But I have learned too. We are very proud of each other, but I don’t have to suggest how to write something and he doesn’t have to tell me how to act. ‘
