On Sunday, the citizens of Turkey will go to the polls to elect mayors and deputies in municipal elections. It will be a measure of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s popularity as his ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) seeks to regain power in key cities it lost in elections five years ago, according to Associated Press.
An AKP victory may give RT Erdogan further confidence to consolidate his power by pushing for constitutional changes that would allow him to lead the country beyond his current term. On the other hand, after the defeat in the presidential and parliamentary elections last year, the divided and demoralized opposition could be significantly strengthened and encouraged by the preservation of power in the big cities.
