On Holy Wednesday, the platform of the Independent Public Revenue Authority (AADE) “myCar” is expected to open so that any of the 150,000 vehicle owners who want to proceed with the removal of immobility, paying traffic fees “by the month”

As stated by the Deputy Minister of Finance Haris Theoharis, speaking to ERT, in the next 24 hours a legislative provision will be forwarded to the Parliament which will enable the owners of I.X. who have put them at a standstill to be able to circulate them for as long as they wish by paying traffic fees according to the months of circulation.

The amount to be paid depends on the months the owners choose to drive the vehicle. For one month they will pay 1/12 of the traffic fees, for two months on 2/12, for 3 months on 3/12, for 4 months on 4/12 and so on.

It is noted that the right to remove immobility is granted only once within the year, while when the period of movement for which traffic fees have been paid proportionally expires, the vehicle must be immediately digitally immobilized, otherwise the owner will be faced with stiff fines . The amount of the fine amounts to 10,000 euros, while in case of recurrence it increases to 30,000 euros and withdrawal of the driver’s license.

In the event that the owner wishes to drive the vehicle for a period of time longer than the one already selected, he will have to pay the remaining amount of the annual traffic fees.

Interested vehicle owners should submit an application on the special platform of AADE (mycar.aade.gov.gr) using the TaxisNet codes, in which they will fill in their personal details and the details of the vehicle. After an automatic check, if the vehicle is insured, the request is submitted and then they will pay the twelfths of the annual traffic fees corresponding to the months of immobilization.

The new penal code

The Ministry of National Economy is preparing a new “penal code” for late payment of traffic fees from 2025 onwards. The main objectives of the financial staff are to rationalize the fines, to put an end to the extension that is given every year to the deadline for the payment of traffic fees without, however, putting at “risk” the collection of 1.2 billion euros per year from traffic fees

A working group has already been set up at the Ministry of National Economy and Finance with the main task of reforming and updating the framework of vehicle traffic fees, processing and studying the new technological economic, social and environmental developments as well as the terms, conditions and criteria for cost formation of fees. The task force is expected to present the first road tax plan in September.

Under the existing system, if a vehicle owner is late in paying the road tax within the stipulated period then he will have to pay an additional amount equal to the amount of the road tax. That is, if on December 31 he had to pay traffic taxes of 135 euros and he did not, then on 1/1 of the following year the amount would double and become 270 euros.

One of the scenarios being considered is for the fine to be incrementally increased by a percentage in the first two months, January and February, and from March onwards to 100%.
